In May 2023, Graudate Women Victoria wrote to the Minister for Education, Jason Clare, regarding the current stipends for PhD students under the Research Training Program. The Federal government's tax-free scholarship stands at $29,863, with universities having the ability to top it up to $46,653. Despite this, these stipends fall short of the minimum wage. This low stipend forces many students, particularly women and those from marginalised backgrounds, to live at or below the poverty line. GWV calls for increased stipend to support students' research capabilities and inclusivity in education. Read the full letter below:
